Retelling story-telling
Media is the most adaptive, competitive, and emotionally-captivating industry we've ever known.
My version of the evolution in media (Space-shifted means that the audience is away from the location of the production. Similarly, time-shifted means the audience is observing the creation at a different time than production.):
- oration: time-sensitive & space-sensitive
- written: time-shifted & space-shifted
- traditional theaters (e.g. Colosseum): time-sensitive & space-sensitive
- recorded action: time-shifted & space-shifted
- traditional broadcast (e.g. radio, television): time-sensitive & space-shifted
So where does that leave us today? Well if you look at the cycle of media evolution what tends to happen is we enhance the experience by enabling more senses or we cause time and/or space to be irrelevant. The reason for increasing the number of senses is obvious as story-telling is emotional and senses direct our emotional responses. Yet, we make time and/or space irrelevant to allow people to increase our base since we can allow our audience to watch in or at a more convenient time. However, there are always compromises to make when time or space becomes irrelevant. Additionally, it requires technological advancements to make time/space-shifting possible.
Time is important to story-telling to build a setting and use a set of general assumptions; while space is important for increased audience participation as they are in a common place to participate and discuss allowing the audience to influence the story-telling.
- Time-sensitive & space-sensitive - audience enhances each others' experience and may affect the story (asking questions, throwing fruit, etc). This is most conducive when there is a complex-sensory tale & participation improves the experience. For example, mock-Revolutionary Wars you can participate and understand what it must have felt.
- Time-shifted & space-shifted - people enjoy the experience on their own terms but lose the participation. If it's time-shifted and space-sensitive then participation is severely inhibited. This is most conducive for stories that have a lower sensory requirement & participation may detract from the understanding. For example, book authors encapsulate all of the emotional requirements in the passages and they want to tell you something/show their vision.
- Time-sensitive & space-shifted - this allows the audience to focus on the story-telling and allows for ad-hoc audiences. This is quite conducive when the story's most important element is the timeliness.
- Time-shifted & space-sensitive - keeps the participation active and also allows people to provide original insight by allowing themselves to think about the situation at a separate time but contribute to the discussion later. For this to work, the common space must be visited by participants consistently and frequently.
